The last day of school. The last day of pre-high school freedom. I would usually want to go out with a bang but forget that, this is only for honors. Jane Pittman overall was an okay book. I still think Shane and The Call of the Wild were better. That is pretty much all I have to say. Now this blog will waste away on some hardrive at some unknown location for the rest of mankinds time on this planet. That's the first deep thought i've had since that pitcher hit me in the head with that ball. I must be getting better. Well that's it. Fini. See you all next year. People keep tying to tell her she never make the thousand mile jouney on foot but she keeps going. I don't see why all these ex-slaves keep going back to the plantations after they're freed. This book in general confuses me. That's mostly because of how they talk though. I read so much of Across Five Aprils and ... Jane Pittman I can't pronounce anything right anymore. My spelling isn't good either but it was bad to start with. This is going to be a short post because all my others are way over 100 words and tomarrow is Eagle Day so do the math. Instead of learning about the people from unknown narrators we learn about the people from the people themselves. The books Shane, The Call of the Wild, and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman provided a lot of raw emotion. So much more can be learned from this point of view. This way we can feel what the person is feeling and thinking not just what they did. This way of learning also isn’t as boring as class.

The first book we read this semester was Shane. This book taught me about the life of people living on the frontier. I learned a lot about the daily life of settlers on the plains. In history class we learned little about the life of the settlers living on the frontier. All we learned was how they got there and a little about how they restarted their lives. We learned next to nothing about their lives after the first year of settling. In Shane we were transported into their lives. It felt like we were there with them. In certain parts of the book we were also taught about some of the weapons and techniques used by outlaws in those times. The book did not go exactly along with what we were learning in class, but we still learned a great deal about lives of settlers.

The Call of the Wild did not really correlate to what we learned in class either, but we still learned many new things. Alaskan dog sledding was not taught to us in class. That was a little too far North for us. Before I read The Call of the Wild I did not know that sled dogs changed masters so often. I thought they were stuck with their masters for life or maybe sold once or twice in their lifetimes. Buck and his pals were sold many times in a matter of months. We also learned a lesson about believing in our team from that book.

The last book we read this year was The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. We read this book at about the same time we were learning more about slavery in class. This helped us understand the brutality of slavery even more. Like I said in my first semester essay, it is always a good idea to learn about a topic from several sources and points of view. Before I read this book I thought former slaves lived on their own on their own property. I did not know that a lot of the freed slaves stayed on the plantations for many years after their freedom. For many of them it was like their lives never changed.

Reading these books for honors has actually helped me in class. It was almost like a study period instead of an extra challenge. I am glad that I decided to do honors humanities. It was not only fun to do, but also very educational. What more could you ask for in a class?

This Brings New Meaning to the Word Stubborn

This little kid refuses everything she is told to do or is offered! It's annoying how rude and direspectful this kid is. Most kids her age are a little stubborn or rude but Jane brings new meaning to the word. The book is kind of slow to start off with. Until the Secesh killed the traveling band of ex-slaves everything was real dull. Then after that point it was still dull. The way the book is written is even worse than the speech in Across Five Aprils. So many grammatical and spelling erorrs. I spelled erorrs wrong didn't I? That's ironic. I am glad that I only have to make three posts on this book since I went to that book meeting thing. The moose hunting part was preety cool. It made Buck look like the blood thirsty hunter that is inside of all large dogs. I say large dogs because your not going to get those kind of hunting skills and tactics from a yorkie or a dachsun. Then things took a turn for the absolute worsed. Buck comes back from the big kill and finds total destruction and death. Unfortunatley for the indians, that killed his friends and destroyed everything he knew, they decided to party after the slaughter. Bad move. The detail that the author followed with would make any World War II veteran sick and scared. The rampage that Buck unleahed is unlike anything that I have ever read, heard, or seen. I won't repeat any thing that was written for those of you with weak stomachs. Then Buck finds a pack of wolves while he is still in killing mode so he shreds a couple of them, too. Then after they stop fighting he joins the pack and lives on in the blood of the wolves and in the not so happy Indian tales of the Evil Spirit. And that's the rest of the story.

The Worlds Strongest Dog Competition

Thats one strong puppy. Buck pulling a 1000 pound sled is like us pulling a small SUV. At first I couldn't believe that Thornton was going to have Buck pull that much weight. Especially when he didn't have enough money to mach the bet. There is a fine line between being brave/confident and being stupid. I'm not sure which side of that line Thornton was on at the time. I thought just to stick with the theme of the story (sad, depressing, bloody, etc.) Buck was going to break all his legs or get going to fast and get run down by the sled. The out look was not good. Then Buck managed to break the sled out of the ice which seems nearly impossible to me. Then he towed it the whole distance and won the bet?????? Up until this point the only thing in the book that had seemed unreal was how depressing the book was but now things are getting a little farfetched. I don't know why the author didn't make that moment incredibly depressing just like the rest of the book. It was the perfect oppertunity to throw in some broken bones, dead friends, and utter destruction. For the first time in the entire book things are going really well for Buck and his friends and I am really confused as to why.

3 Posts in One Night

I am sooooo far behind that I had to do this post and my last two all in one night. AND I STILL HAVE 2 MORE TO GO!!! Back to the book now. Buck is really gettin' all sorts of tradgedies thrown in his direction. First he was starving, then one of his friends died, and then ALL his pals died at the same time. This book is like a Ben Stiller movie. Things go from ok to bad, to really bad, to worst day ever bad, to scuicidal bad, to end of the world bad, to there's no more french fries bad. And then keeping with the Ben Stiller theme somthing good happens. After absolutley every thing that can go wrong goes wrong Buck is happy again after like 2 years. Can you say Murphy's law? It's kind of funny how Buck looks so happy on the cover of the book but the book is so utterly depressing.

Ding Dong Spitz Dead!

I said it before and I'll say it again, wow. Jack London is taking the fights a little to far. He is talking about jugulars gettin' ripped out, eyes being poked out of their sockets, bones crunching, etc. I thought the violence started out bed but it's getting really bad even for me. I had to reread a couple of parts to make sure that London had actually put some things in the book. How the heck is this thing a childrens book? Any one younger than us would have nightmares for days if they read this stuff. At least all the bloody fights with Spitz are over. That was one baaaad puppy. At first Buck couldn't have been happier but now hes freezing his butt off in Alaska pulling sleds. Thats like being kidnapped and sent to Siberia to make railroads. Not too fun. The author of this book apparently semi-famous for his blood and guts storys. Personally I think he is mentally desturbed. Maybe he had a really horrific childhood or something. The only thing I don't like about this book so far is that I can not under stand anything these Eskimo guys are saying. Sorry if I'm politically incorrect with the word "Eskimo". These guys talk like they got a mouth full of marbles and dentures that are 10 sizes too big. "Dat der dug make ged fiter." Translation please?

Brought Down in a Hail of Gunfire!

And then there was one... Finally the characters in the book figure out that those things in thier holsters can hurt people. Shane turned back into the lone ranger murderer he was in the beginning of the book and it was COOL! He took out Wilson and Fletcher. All the while he only got shot once in the stomach. Only one thing I don't get. Shots to the stomach like that back then were usually fatal. And with the way Shane comes and goes he's probabley been shot many many times. If you listen carfully you can probabley hear the bulletes rattle in him. Sounds painful huh? The book overall was probabley the best book we have read so far. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10. It wasn't great but it was good. The author ended the book very well with Shane riding off into the night. And he was Shane.

Shane 2 Fletcher 0

These fight scenes are really cool. There's lots of blood, broken bones, and all that good stuff. Like Joe said the author uses good imagery. You think Morgan and all his goons would be smart enough to just whip out a gun and put a few bullets in Shane rather than getting their butts kicked in hand-to-hand combat with him. That wouldn't be a very good book though. All the fights so far in the book are all the same. There good but all the same. Big guy tries to use brute force to hurt Shane. Shane dodges big guy. Shane beats the crud out of him etc. Nobody commented on my last blog and I thought it was really funny. That's depressing. :(

If Only He Had a Bazooka

That was one heck of a fight. The author used really good visulaization. You could here every bone shatter and every drop of blood squirt out of Chris's face. Gettin' queezey yet? The only thing that could have made that fight better would be some explosions and a really big gun. A good old fashioned bazooka could do both of those. I can see it now. Shane walks into the bar with his massive bazooka. He sees Chris in the corner poking fun at him. Shane walks over to chris. Chris soils himself as he sees the bazooka. Then all hell breaks loose. The whole tavern is ingulfed in a couple of hurendous explosions. Out of the rubble and flames walks a lonely figure. Shane. Wasn't that cool!? He goes from a wild west shootem up kind of guy (most likley what he was) to some farmers second hand man. That's a little strange. Whats even stranger are the weird flashback daydream things he has when ever he talks about guns or fighting. Yeah, he's pretty nuts. The author is kind of over doing the lone ranger and disturbed past thing. I think we all got that part after about page five and he's still pushing it. I think Shane is going to be even better than Tom Sawyer. I'm not saying thats's too terribly hard to do though. My darn computer keeps doing the italics even though I don't want it to! That's the second time this has happened! This is weird. I have to turn italics on to turn it off. Hmmmm. Some weird outlaw stranger walks up to your house and you let him in. That part was almost normal. Then it got kind of weird. He becomes their new best friend, talks about cloths with the wife, helps the dad get a good deal on some equipment, and during all that manages to eat his own weight in pancakes. What doesn't this guy do?! And during all of this the don't know a thing about his personal life. Hmmmmm. Then we reach the Mecca of weird. Shane gets angry for some reason and decides to go medeveal on the devil stump. Then in order to not look like less of a man the dad joins in the festivities. After working for hours on end with axes such then they grunt at each other a couple of times they try to rip it out of the ground with their bare hands. How many different ways can you spell blisters from heck. I think they were trying to prove something to each or something. Yes I know I'm behind on the blogs but I'm working on it okay. Oh yeah, Champ quit commenting on my blog it's starting to get kind of creepy. Please hold your applause. Every night 40-50 pages of reading and a post or two. At least it went way faster than JT and Blackbird Pond. If it had been as bad as those two I don't know how I would have survived. Everything in the ending of the book happened down in those caves. The finding of the money, Tom's heroic accomplishment, and Joe's grusome end. Bear with me on the spelling. The way Joe died I would wish on no one. Eating candles and bats in an attempt to survive? No thank you. I don't see how the candles could keep you going though. I don't think they have anything healthy in them. The second I read tabout the doors in the cave I thought "this is not going to be pretty" and it wasn't. To say the least. What really baffled me was how much money Tom ended up with. $12,000 back then (I'm guessing) would be around a couple hundred thousand today. That's a pretty good wad of cash for a kid. Think of all the dead cats he could buy!!! Lots of fresh ones still under the effects of Rigormortis. I think that's how you spell it. Why is no one commenting on my blogs? Please tell me!

Huck Does Some Shadow Ops

Huck and Tom must be insane or really greedy to be following a murderer around for some money. I guess that much money would be like $100,000 or so today. But still they're going to get one across the wind pipe or one right between the eyes if you know what I mean. Huck has way more guts than Tom. Tom would never have gone after Joe and that other guy. Maybe he would have, who knows? Huck turned into like a minature southern James Bond for a couple pages. I thought for sure Joe was going to catch Huck and hold him hostage or something. Something like that usually happens to the best friend when he's doing something brave in most books. But then again I guess Tom Sawyer is better than most books. It was kind of weird how those Welsh vigilanties (unofficial citizen cops) came into the story all the sudden. I hadn't read any thing about them until the widow chapter and then they're like U.S. Marshalls all the sudden. Going around shooting at people and making things exciting. The more understandable accents they have add more character to the book thanjust the usual southern drawl.

3 Zombie Pirates and a Flying Indian, What's Next?

I'm surprised our three "pirates" did get the whoopin' of there lives when they returned from their little fantasy land. Captain Tom was starting to become kind of a harsh ruler for a second there. I thought he was going to brutaly force Huck and that other guy to stay. To bad. It would have been a good fight. A couple of missing teeth never hurt anyone. The thing between Tom and Becky is gettin' weird. They love each other, then Becky hates Tom, then it's the other way around, then they love each other again. Aaaaaah! Make up your (censored) mind!!! When Tom was lucky that Injun Joe didn't try to kill him on the spot. If I had a crazed murderous Indian on the loose that wanted me dead I would be scared, too. Imagine, every night you wonder if you'll see the light of day again. You hear a rustle out side your window so you jump out of bed and grab a bat. It was only the wind. So you go back to bed. Then a crash! Thud! Bang! Whack! Then nothing. Creepy huh? I hope someone actually reads this post.

This is Gonna be Interestin'

Finnaly a book for honors that is halfway interesting! I still can't understand a word they're saying but I know a murder when I read one. In Johnny Tremain and The Witch of Blackbird Pond the authors didn't have the guts to put in any gorey violence in or anything. Tender footed woosies. Johnny Tremain got close but it did it in a very unexicting way. In Tom Sawyer you could almost hear the stabbing and the gurgling. It was cool! Some people might get queasy from that but it makes a book interesting. After Tom and his friends ran away I think they went a little far with the pirate thing. It got kind of annoying. Since I was so far behind I have read almost 100 pages today alone. Only 110 to go in 3 days. This may be a bit difficult. At least it will go faster than the past books. This book is 1000 times better than the other two books. For those of you who play Phoosball at lunch don't woory I'm going to make a new defender in Tech Ed.

Honors Books

Honors Humanities has taught me an enormous amount about the history of the United States. The books we have read have filled in the blanks left by social studies and history classes in past years. Thanks to Johnny Tremain and The Witch of Blackbird Pond I have a better understanding of the Revolutionary War culture and events. The way the war was explained in history it seemed like the Revolutionary War was a spur of the moment ordeal not a long process that took years to get moving. The ideas of the people around the time were explained very well in The Witch of Blackbird Pond. The beliefs in witchcraft and the superstitions at the time were very interesting. I learned more than just these facts from the books.

Johnny Tremain helped me gain a better understanding of what the people were going through in colonial times. In history you are taught the facts and dates and very little in between. When reading a book from the point of view of a Boston citizen at the time of the Boston tea party is not only interesting but informative. You experience the conspiracy like you were there. Thanks to Johnny Tremain I understand the perils that the people went through before, during, and after the war.

Before I read Johnny Tremain, I thought that it was like the Boston Massacre one week, the Boston tea party the next, and war after that. After reading Johnny Tremain, I now know it took several years for the Revolutionary War to start. It was not a sporadic all of a sudden ordeal like you might think. In some ways I have learned more about the Revolutionary War from Johnny Tremain than I have from history classes. I may not have liked the book very much but I learned a lot from it.

From reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond I was taught about the religious and superstitious beliefs of colonial people. I already knew how hard life was for colonists from history class but, I did not know about how superstitious the people were back then. The almost unbelievable ways people thought at the time were very surprising to me. The way some colonists were described almost made me think less of some Revolutionary War patriots. I had no idea they were so accepting of the execution of their fellow townspeople on charges that were almost improvable. Some colonists seemed to be obsessed with convicting others of witchcraft. You do not get taught facts like that from history class. Once again, the book was not that exciting but, I learned from it. I see a repeating pattern here.

The combination of what I have learned from history class and what I have learned from these books gives me a clear picture in my mind of what life was like during the Revolutionary War and the years surrounding it. Everything is so much easier for me to understand thanks to what I have read. The books may not have been as enjoyable to read as my history textbook but, talking about them on the blogs was fun. It is good to learn about a topic from many different sources. What I have learned about American history is a good example of that.

4 Days Left and 5 Posts to Go

I have been reading so many other books latley I haven't had much time for Tom Sawyer. When Tom was talking about how he would be missed was he trying to comit scuicide in the pond or something? That part was kind of unclear to me. I kept wondering why he was trying to kill himself. The way the people talk in this book is really hard to understand. It is almost like Southern English is a different language. I have to read many parts over and over again to figure out what they're saying. The things that the kids trade with each other are just plain strange. They're trading teeth, cycloptic cats, dead cats, door knobs and lots of other weird stuff. I guess thats what you do when your a poor southerner.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond Episode: 5

Finally I've finished the book and gotten around to making the final post for it. Overall it was an okay book but still not one of my favorites. I'd give it about a 6 out of 10. It was a little to slow to start and it was too mushy lovey for me. It seemed like more of a girls book. My blog was really messed up for a while after break started but I think that might have just been a problem with the school network. It was perfectly fine later. Weird. The star things Harrison let us make are hard to build. Mine has already taken me a couple hours and I haven't even started to put it together yet. I'm Just throwing words down so my post will be long enough. Bear with me people. I finished the book almost a month ago so I don't remember much. I ran out of ideas at about the third sentence of my post. Happy new year.

Cruff Gets a Swift Kick in the Rear

And that's the ball game. Final Score: Kit 1 Cruff 0. I'm glad Mrs. Cruff lost the case. Another bonus was having Mr. Cruff and Prudence shut her up. After having Mrs. Cruff ruin every other seen in the book someone finally proved her wrong. Prudence stopped being so timid and sad all the time, too. I think everyone in the book and in honors had had enough of Mrs. Cruff's insane acusations. Witch, witch, witch, bla, bla, bla. It gets old real quick. During the case it seemed like Kit was trying to lose at some points. She was confessing to things she didn't do and was pretty ill-willed. Good thing Nat and Prudence saved her. She owes them big time. I wasn't expecting Nat to get his own boat and crew at the end of the book. That was pretty cool. The Witch it's kind of expected but it fits well. It took Nat and Kit longer than I thought to realize that they loved each other. I can't get my computer to stop doing the italics. The little button isn't pushed in and I tried everything else I know. I must have hit some button I don't know about. Hopefully it won't mess up anything else.

It's super Kit to the rescue!

The book has actually taken a turn for the better. I don't fall asleep when I read it anymore. I wasn't expecting anything exciting from this book. Kit made a very brave decision when she went to go save Hannah. Remember there is a very fine line between bravery and stupidity. I just relized something... Hannah is the same forwards as it is backwards. I can't remember what they call those. Too bad the village people burned down her house. They were completely insane. I'm starting to think that Goodwife Cruff is a witch. She's always saying that other people are witches, bewitched, etc. She sounds like a broken record player or a talking parrot. She might be doing that just to get attention away from herself. Think about it. She could also be totally out of her mind. Yeah, I think it's that. I really can't stand her character. Every time she enters a scene it's like HERE SHE COMES TO WRECK THE DAY!!!!! Now since we've had a four day weekened we have three straight weeks of school with nothing special included. The last day of the last week is my birthday though. At least I've got that and Christmas to look forward to. THE END. Or is it?

Those are some strange critters

I think the problem I'm having with the books we're reading is they have almost no plot. There is no mission or goal for the main character to accomplish. Without a plot a book can't be very good. Anyways the book has some really weird characters. People like John H., Nat, Hanah, and pretty much every body else. John H. thinks the priest guy is god himself and would probabley jump off a bridge for him. Nat is named after a bug and he's mean to kit then he's kind then he thinks she's a witch because she can swim and read. I hope every girl I know can read and I think most can swim. I know that's what they believed back then but it's so illogical. Hanah is... um... yeah. She's pretty freaken creepy. Just a little troll that nobody likes just because she doesn't go to church. Heck I don't go to church and nobody thinks I'm a witch, I hope. I think Hanah might put something in those blueberry pies, yum, that she gives people. Whenever she gets a kid at her door she gives them a pie and then the kid can't get enough of her. Since she is a "witch" I wouldn't put it passed her.

Whack! ...zzzzzzzzzzz... Huh? What?

I finally managed to get to the next book: The Witch of Blackbird Pond. This book is like a tranquilizer. The second you read the first word...WHACK!!! Your head hits your desk and instant unconsiousness. After you wake up from your coma you try to continue reading but you keep falling asleep! Thats pretty much what happened to me. This book is probably going to be one of the worst books I'll ever read. I'm hoping we'll eventually read a good book for honors. I have a feeling this book is going to be a lot like Johnny Tremain. Complain complain cry cry. Has anyone noticed that all the books we're reading smell funny? The books are probabley older than we are just like the text books we use.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://buske.blogspot.com/2004/11/whack-zzzzzzzzzzz-huh-what.html' title='Whack! ...zzzzzzzzzzz... The author tried to make it seem like Johnny was an outcast who everyone picked on. It was okay at first but after 100 pages of boo hoo sob sob it gets annoying. You know what I mean? Does any body know if the next book is any good? One little tip for Andrew Clark... Reeeeeeeeeeead Faaaaaaaaaaaaster. If it takes over a month or two to read a book as short as short as JT then you might want to try to read a little quicker. I really hope this thing is almost 100 words now. Anyway I hope the next book is good.

It's not over till it's over and it's over, thank god

I have finished Johnny Tremain. Unfortunatley I have to post on it one more time not including this one. Uh-oh. That's not good.
I was almost hoping that Johnny would get himself killed. I know that sounds mean but honestly people. Most of you were proably hoping the same thing. I was hoping that Johnny would get his hand cut off or blown off or something like that so he would stop complaing about how usless it was. Sorry, that was kind of gory people. Too bad Rab died, I think. That part was kind of unclear to to me. At least the book is done. Dang now I have to go to the library and get the next one. Now is it just me or is JT complaining all the time. He keeps thinking that no body likes him, he's usless as a person, and bla bla bla bla bla. Sob sob sob. GET USED TO IT PAL!!! Or just realize that you need to try to acomplish something in life and people aren't leaving because they don't like you it's because they're doing something with their lives unlike you. Although I am wondering if they're leaving because the can't stand how the kid acts. Man it feels good venting like this. Seriously somebody please hit this kid with a horse or something else heavy. Imagine what Paul Revere and Sam Adams would be thinking about this kid. There is one thing I cant figure out. On the cover of the book JT is holding a musket but his fingers are spread apart. Anybody else think that's weird? Good by for now.

Johnny Tremain p.100

Thursday, October 14, 2004

I am still reading the book Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. After Johnny burned his hand he went into a deep depression. He kept thinking that he wouldn't be able to do anything that might interest him or that he had the skills for. He eventually got a job at a printing shop for the Boston Observer. He worked with a boy named Rab. Rab's uncle Lorne runs the shop and is secretly the host of the meetings of the head men of the wigs. The wigs are the people opposed to the English rule of the thirteen colonies. They are plotting a revolution in Boston and the surrounding area which they hope will inspire the rest of the nation to do the same. Johnny helps with the meetings and sends messages for the leaders, too.

Johnny Tremain

I am reading the book Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. The story is about a teenage boy living in Boston, Massachusetts during he Revolutionary . He is apprentice to a silver smith named Mr. Lapham. Johnny's mother died just after she sighned him to Mr. Lapham as an apprentice. Johny was the best of the three apprentices Mr. Lapham had until Dove (another apprentice) gave Johny a crack crucible to pour molten silver into. When Johny poored the silver into the crucible it spilled all over his hand buring him very badly and causing him to pass out. When Johnny had the bandages taken off all his fingers had healed together in cluding his thumb. This ended Johny's career as a silver smith forever. Johnny is curently very depressed and looking for a new job that doesn't involve too much hand work. Dove the bad apprentice has been rubbing it in Johnn's face since Dove is now the head apprentice instead of Johnny.
